Finale iPad Music Viewer Announced

by Scott Yoho 18. January 2012 06:48

Because MakeMusic is a public company, I can’t talk about products in development that have not yet been publically announced. Over the last several months I have received MANY requests for a means to share Finale-created music on the iPad. While I dutifully forward these suggestions to our development team, I’ve been unable to say “of course we’re working on it.”

Until today.

This morning MakeMusic announced an upcoming iPad music app that will enable iPad users to view, print, and play music created in Finale. Better yet, it’s on display this week (Jan 19-22, 2012) at the NAMM Show, the music industry trade show in Anaheim, California.

My goal is to bring some video back from NAMM of the new app in action and share it with you on this blog. If you’re planning to attend the show, you can beat me to the punch by seeing it for yourself at our booth # 6112 (Hall A).

I wish I was able to go to the NAMM this year, out of town this weekend! Well anyways, is this app going to be strictly for iPad or will it be available for the iPhone users as well?

This is awesome! Now only if it could be adapted for the kindle fire that would be even more awesome. I know that the Kindle fire is smaller and probably can't print but it would be nice to be able to view and share files.

Thanks for the feedback -- I'm glad to forward all requests that we support android, iphones, and kindles as well.

Regarding the NAMM Show, it's not technically open to the public, but there are special invites for music educators and many others. I'd check their site for details: http://www.namm.org/thenammshow/2012

So let me get this straight this is an app lets lets you *view* finale files on an iPad. That is all it does...it lets you *view* the music on an iPad. Is there anything revolutionary about this? I could just export as a pdf and view it all the same. I guess if it allows playback that is a good thing. But really is there any reason to not just export it as a PDF for viewing purposes? Now if you can add simple editing and more advanced playback now we'd be talking about something.

Hi all,

As the post states, we're announcing the ability to view, play, and print.

That's not everything (wouldn't want to give it all away now!), but it won't have editing. I would see that as a different app, and while I can't comment on future plans, that's something that would be awesome to have.

As for right now we're focusing efforts on iPad only for this app. As the Android tablet market grows and a tablet version of the OS becomes popular, we may look to add support for that as well.

Thanks everyone!
