Finale, Marketing, and the Piano Player

by Tom Johnson 15. September 2011 09:32

I like the recent additions to the Finale website that invite a direct comparison between Finale and Sibelius sounds, playback, and support.

Of course there are many other reasons to choose one notation product over the other. Today I’d like to share one that’s pretty near the top of my “Could-Never-Switch-to-Sibelius” reasons for piano players like me.

Imagine you are playing in a two-handed piece like this:

Because the split point (the point at which notes are distributed to one or the other staff) was manually set at the “B” below middle “C,” the notes are correctly distributed in the first four bars. However, in measure 5, the middle Cs should appear in the bottom staff, not the top staff.

Correcting these changing split points is just one more area where Finale shines.

Here’s the first way I might fix this:

  1. Select the Note Mover Tool.
  2. From the Note Mover menu select “Delete After Merge.”
  3. Click and drag around the middle C’s in measure 5 and drag them down to the bottom staff.
As you do this, the notes magically merge into the lower staff giving you perfect notation.

Another solution is to use the Plug-in called “Split Point:”

  1. From the Selection Tool, select the area you want to edit.
  2. From the Plug-ins menu select Scoring and Arranging>Split Point.
  3. Set the Split Point you want for that region and click “OK”.

The first solution lets you move individual notes, while the second lets you move multiple measures at a time.  The beauty is that you can choose, and quickly notate, any music that appears on two staves, including harp, organ, harpsichord, celeste, piano, marimba, etc.

Let me know how you’re getting along with Finale’s split point features, or ask any question, by clicking on “Comments” below.

I have this idea about a product I would like you to come up with. I am a musician- a singer. I would love to read music off of an IPad. If there was an application that allowed markings to be made just like you do in a rehearsal with a pencil- there could be a special pen accessory that made the marks and the end with an eraser that the computer recognized to erase the marks. That would be amazing. I guarantee people would buy it.

Melissa, there does exist software for iPad that does what you wish, and more. It uses PDF files.  (I don't think it reads Finale files, but you can print to PDF easily.)

See http://www.musicreader.net/

Specific iPad app here:

I haven't tried it (I don't have an iPad.)  It is also available on tablet PC and some other platforms, which I haven't tried yet, either, but I want to.

Hi José,

Thanks for the comment. While Sibelius 5 took major steps toward improving its ability to handle split point edits, Finale's NoteMover Tool allows more individual edits to be done simply and effectively. Both programs, since Sibelius 5, have a Split Point plug-in. Only Finale has the abilities contained within the NoteMover Tool.

Hi Tom

You're right, Sibelius does not have the "NoteMover Tool", but does not need it. Does the same functions differently. Thats all.

Anyway I do not want to start any controversy. This is a blog Finale and it is logical to magnify the features of the program.

I am a teacher and teach beginer students in publishing scores with the small Finale Notepad (not free but very cheap) and MuseScore (Free). (It is preferable to students using pirated software.) I was waiting version 2012 to purchase a license from Finale, to teach more advanced functions on both programs. Yes, I must be crazy, I want to use Sibelius and Finale, Notion and MuseScore. But there are two things that make me hesitate:

1 .- The price. (199 € crossgrade license, expecting a price around 120€)

2 .- The Finale obsession for trying to pretend that Sibelius is a bad program. (dark and evil as a vampire). I use Sibelius for many hours every day so I must be a member of the dark side of the force ... (I can almost hear in my head: "Luke, I am your father";) )

Anyway thanks for read and posting my opinions and answer to my comments Tom.

Luck with Finale 2012. Maybe "finally" I choose to be Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or maybe not.
