Finale QuickTips: Cross-Staff Beaming

by Justin Phillips 28. June 2011 06:16

When creating cross staff beaming in Finale, many people use the NoteMover Tool or the TG Tools Cross-Staff Plug-in to move notes from one staff to another.

While both of these options do the job well, I’d like to share an even quicker way to do this.

1. Choose the Selection Tool then click + drag to select the notes you wish to move.

2. Press Alt+Shift+Up/Down Arrow (Win) or Option+Shift+ Up/Down Arrow (Mac).

Arg! This apparently doesn't work with finale printmusic 2011. Sad day.

Hi Daniel,

You are correct, this is a Finale feature not found in PrintMusic. Sorry!

Is this a Finale 2011 feature? When I do this in 2010, it just highlights the same section in the staff above. I checked to see if my SPACES hotkey was messing with this (opt+arrowkey), but it's not.

This shortcut illustrates, again, how many subtle, easily accessible shortcuts there are in this incredible digital musical notation application! I'm continually amazed at the versatility of this.

We need at least two lifetimes to uncover the gems included in this application!

Hi cgilmore,

I can make this work with Finale 2010 if I omit the shift key and just use opt+arrowkey (mac) or alt+arrowkey (win). Does that do the trick for you?

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the comment. I love the moog photo on your website. Makes me think of Wendy Carlos!

@Scott

Yes, that did work. I had to change my Spaces shortcut, but that's ok. Smile

And btw, this is a great tip!

So, there's ultimately no way to cross-staff beam in PrintMusic 2011?

Hi Michael,

Correct. Finale supports cross-staff beaming, PrintMusic does not.
