Adjusting Tuplet Options with Finale

by Justin Phillips 24. March 2011 04:56

I recently spoke with a customer who was updating a Finale file originally created back in 1992. This particular piece contained a lot of tuplets that had a different look and feel than what he wanted to use today.

Specifically, he wanted to change tuplets that looked something like this:

…to something a little more standard like this:

While he found it easy to make these changes on each individual tuplet, after editing a handful manually, he began to wonder if there wasn’t an easier way.

There certainly is!

The Change Tuplets utility allows you to adjust settings for all tuplets in a selected region. Try this:

  1. Select the Selection Tool
  2. Press Ctrl/Cmd + A to Select All (or select the measure region needed)
  3. Go to Utilities Menu > Change > Tuplets:

  4. Under Appearance, click on the Number dropdown and select your desired option
  5. Press OK

Done! Change Tuplets is also helpful for changing other tuplet settings, such as bracket shape and number placement.

is what I have posted on my http://arkady.com/fb & http://twitter.com/#!/arkadymusic  I've also emailed Finale about it, and didn't hear back!

Maybe Finale is like Apple these days, and says nothing about its future products? But... It'd be nice to at least know that somebody at Finale saw that Request of mine:

I want to use iPad as Pencil and Paper and have Finale convert it, or at least something close to that to start with!!! Music Entry anywhere! Portable! Instant! Shareable! More Ideas here: http://bit.ly/aK8ihW" rel="nofollow">http://bit.ly/aK8ihW

Please someone at Finale let me know that you at least saw this, and that your bosses know about this!!!!

I am having trouble using the tuplet tool on demonstration versions of SongWriter and NotePad.  I would like to be able to put 7 quarter notes in the space of a four-beat measure for example.  When I had PrintMusic 2001, I could do that.  Surely there are many composers who use really far out rhythms.  I have a bunch of piano pieces I really should get written down.  Thanks,  Dave
