Best Use of Music Notation in a YouTube Video

by Scott Yoho 6. January 2011 05:29

I’ve recently discovered a few YouTube videos that make great use of music notation. I'd like to propose that the Finale blog should present its own award for the “Best Use of Music Notation in a YouTube Video,” or, at the very least, we should share some links to the best notation-related videos.

To start things off I’ll submit three nominations:

  1. Trombonist Michael B. Nelson was previously featured in the Finale blog here. Michael has posted a handful of very well-done transcriptions of performances by members of his incredible group the Horn Heads. While it’s hard to pick a favorite, here’s Michael’s trombone solo on “Fat Lip.”
  2. Although Michael’s jazz solo transcriptions are great, I think they’re eclipsed by Michael’s transcription of his bandmate Kathy Jensen’s signature laugh.
  3. While that’s tough to beat, this next one caught me off-guard, and also deserves a nomination for “Best Use of Typography in a YouTube Video,” (another highly-contested category, I’m sure). It’s a rock video for the Jonathan Coulton song entitled “Shop Vac.” If you’re impatient for notation, you might fast forward to 2:00, but you’d be missing a great pop song.

Know of additional videos we should consider? Share them with us (as well as vote for your favorite) by clicking on “Comments” below.

Looney Tunes - High Note is so funny.  I'll never look at music notation the same way again. www.youtube.com/watch

Thanks Janet!

I can't believe I didn't remember to include "High Note!" Great stuff. I'm sure there's some Walt Disney examples to include as well.

I've never seen this Giant Steps video before, and it's wonderful -- thanks so much!

It would be cool if there was a playback option to see the notes appear at playback like the dancohen videos linked above.

Wisher

Hello,

I am working on an orchestra piece in Finale 2011 with GPO 4.0 and East West Symphonic Orchestra Library.

All works perfectly well. However, I can't "Mix" for them. In Logic 9, I can adhust the "Higher Hz" or increase "Lower Hz" to make the music sounds not like computer music but a live recording. Many friends of mine don't like use Finale to write songs or edit music because of Finale's bad ability of Mixer and MIDI edit...

I think the ability of Mixer and Master are very important and useful for users. I hope: we can use better Mixer like Cubase, logic 9, in Finale 2012!!

I love Finale and will work on it

Hi Wisher,

You can utilize VST or AU effect plug-ins (such as an EQas you described) in Finale 2011 to do this like in any sequencer.

In addition, the Aria Player has a built-in EQ for each instrument under "Controls".

Hi James,

I'm glad to forward your suggestion that you'd like to see a playback option in Finale that allows note to not apprear until they playback.

It was my understanding that the ShopVac video was created by Jarrett Heather. Can you let me know what the dancohen connection is?

Thanks,

Andrea Amici

To present my music I made some notation-based video animations for my site and my YouTube Channel:

Salmo 116 for chorus and piano (winner of the first prize at the 9th edition of "Musica e Cultura a Piazza dei Martiri" Contest in Naples, Italy)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pLdz3bjG4k

Stabat Mater for chorus and organ (winner of a special mention at the "Iconavetere" Prize in Italy)

Are they good for this thread?
Best regards

Hi Andrea,

Certainly, thanks for sharing. Did you create the music notation as well? Using Finale?

My last works were made with Sibelius, but now I'm testing Finale 2011, because of his better playback features: Human Playback is really amazing; I work with EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Gold Play Edition and Symphonic Choirs, hosted in Logic, routing midi signals from Finale 2011 and the first attempts are really encouraging! Finale, also, has the ability to send/receive midi clock and it should be a good value too.
