Creating PDF files from Finale scores

by Justin Phillips 30. September 2010 05:09

Need to share a Finale score with a collaborator who doesn’t own Finale? You could simply send your Finale file. By downloading the free Finale Reader anyone can view, play and print any Finale file you share.

But perhaps your collaborator doesn’t need to hear your file play back. Or maybe you’d like to share a version of your score that cannot be edited in Finale NotePad or other MakeMusic products. These are two situations when you might prefer to share a PDF file of your score.

PDF’s can be easily created on both Mac and PC, and can be created directly from Finale. If you are using a Mac, the PDF printing functionality is built into the operating system. Just navigate to the File Menu, select Print, click the PDF option, and then select “Save as PDF.”

If you are using a PC, PDF creation software is needed. Once PDF creation software is installed you select it just as you would a printer, but instead of printing to a page it prints a file. While Windows doesn’t include a PDF creator, there are several free and open source options available for download. CutePDF, PDF Creator, and PDF995 are all great choices, and have roughly the same features.

Once you’ve chosen and installed a PDF creator, you may wish to refer to this Knowledge Base article we’ve created that covers the steps to creating PDF files on Windows.

If these PDF creators are free and open-source, maybe Finale could include one of them in its Windows product. This would be a lot easier for folks in multi-workstation environments.

I recommend pdfFactory http://www.fineprint.com/
I haven't tried the other suggested programs, but pdfFactory works perfectly on files which, for example, Adobe's own Acrobat software messes up completely.
It's free indefinitely if you can live with a link to Fineprint's site; otherwise, $49.95 well spent.
I use it to preview the print output as I work as well as to create charts to email to my band memners.

I have been using PrimoPDF from Nitro PDF software with great success. The product is free and it does very precise and quick PDF renderings of my Finale score. PrimoPDF can be found at http://www.primopdf.com.

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the tip!

Those wishing to explore Neil's suggestion may need to remove the period from the end of the website name.

Best wishes,
