Lyrics in Finale 2011

by Justin Phillips 2. June 2010 09:22

Last week I wrote about Staff Layout advancements in Finale 2011 and how they help users follow their own workflow. I believe these changes benefit all users in that they make the process more intuitive and flexible. That said, there is one group of Finale users for whom Staff Layout is not the biggest news in Finale 2011.

I am referring to those whose music includes lyrics. Finale 2011 improves both the way lyrics are entered and how they appear. This week I’d like to look at a few of the more subtle but dramatic improvements in the realm of lyrics.

The example below is an excerpt from a file created in Finale 2010:

Let’s focus on the music spacing for a minute; the above example represents what Finale 2010 and previous versions of Finale would do by default. It looks good, but would require some tweaking to meet with an engraver’s approval.

For example, notice the extra space that appears between the time signature and the first note; Finale forced the notation over to the right to make room for the lyrics. If these verses started with larger syllables, the problem would be even more pronounced. While previous versions of Finale would let you move these syllables further to the left, you’d have to fine-tune the music that followed as well to get the overall measure to space as you’d wish.

If you were to enter the same music in Finale 2011, it would look better as you entered it:

Notice that the spacing at the start of each measure is more natural, and is technically correct from an engraving standpoint. No manual editing required.

You can see this and other lyric spacing improvements — in action — in the short lyrics video found here.

Finale 2011 also advances the way lyrics are entered, and this, too, is covered briefly in the video.

One aspect not covered in the video, however, has to do with numbering lyric verses, which used to be a little tricky if you desired both proper number alignment and lyric spacing. Now with a menu item, Finale automatically adds the verse numbers and spaces the music and lyrics accordingly.

That took two mouse clicks. In earlier versions you would have spent a little time with this to make it just right, and that would have been time away from composing. Or arranging. Or wherever your muse was taking you.

It's driving me crazy to see beats 3 and 4 of the first measure tied in the "alto" part with separate syllables--not that it really detracts from what you are telling us. Can't wait for my copy of F2011 to arrive.

You mentioned a couple of mouse clicks to automatically add the verse numbers into the score. What are they? I can't find them and I'm unable to view the video. Thank you!

Hi Derrek,

Thanks for the feedback. Would you prefer to see a word extension in the lyrics where the slur appears at beat 3 and 4 of measure one? My sources suggest that in this situation you'd follow the melody line, which we did here.

Of course you could make it look any way you'd wish with Finale!

Best wishes,

Hi Brian,

To automatically add verse numbers in Finale 2011, go to the Lyrics menu and choose Auto-Number>Lyrics. Done.

That might only be one mouse click.

Please let me know if I can help with your difficulty in viewing the video; it works fine for me from our site and on YouTube at http://tinyurl.com/3xotq6c

Best wishes,

Scott,

No word extension. Since my background predisposes me to read this as part of a chorale, I would just omit the slur between beats 3 and 4 of the "alto" part in measure 1 (since that part would also be singing separate syllables on the last two beats). Beyond that, I'm happy with what you had; and as I said, it is really not something that affects the point you were making in your article. I'm half sorry I mentioned it.

I used to just put the verse numbers in by inserting them as text...  It wasn't that big of a deal but this will save time.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the comment. I'm with Tom -- this is a great example of something you and I have always been able to accomplish with Finale, now prorvided in a way that anyone can do it!

Best wishes,

In your example with Finale 2011 verse numbers, the numbers are right justified nicely, with the periods in alignment. However, the syllable "Zi-" is no longer centered under the note head, but left-aligned. Is there a setting that can make these syllables center-aligned, or are we just stuck with the strange left-alignment?

If we're stuck with left-alignment, then the feature isn't usable in our publications. We currently use expressions to create verse numbers, which works great and doesn't take too much time. The little time-saver for verse numbers isn't a time-saver if you have to tweak the syllable alignment every time.

Hi Scott,

The answer is YES. The control you're looking for exisited in previous versions of Finale as well: Under Document Options>Lyrics set "First Sylable in Lyric" to Center Justification.

When I make this change in Finale 2011 the verse numbers remain where they are while the "Zi-" sylable centers under the note. No tweaking necessary.

Let me know if that's not what you had in mind.

Thanks for the answer, "Scott from MakeMusic". I just needed to be sure that the syllable alignment was a global tweak, and not an individual-case tweak.

Looking forward to getting our copy of FInale 2011 in-house this week!
